About

Purpose

The purpose of this new organization is to bring leading presenters to our beautiful valley to discuss important issues on a non-partisan basis. A group of leading citizens from Basalt to Glenwood Springs are the Founders of the Council. Several of them are active at the Aspen Institute and wish to bring a bit of the same quality to our down valley citizens.

Jim Calaway Chairman

I’ve always had a dream about using the Thunder River Theater to have some presenters of distinction come and talk about cultural, political, ecological and all kinds of issues that we want to know about…and some we ought to know about. – Jim Calaway

The main purpose and mission of the council’s events is to make an affordable, lovely opportunity for all the people in the Roaring Fork Valley. I hope it will last into the future, long after I’m gone, to enrich and benefit our lives – Jim Calaway

The council will have as partners Colorado Mountain College and Thunder River Theatre Company where the events will be held.

Fact Sheet

Roaring Fork Cultural Council -

Who: The Roaring Fork Cultural Council. A group of local founders whose vision is to bring prominent experts on cultural, political and ecological issues to speak with Roaring Fork Valley residents. The Council is co-chaired by Jim Calaway and Craig Rathbun, and acts in partnership with Colorado Mountain College and the Thunder River Theatre Company.

Format: For the first hour, moderator Jim Calaway will pose questions and then questions will be taken from the audience.

Dialogue is a key element for this event and upcoming events planned by the council. Calaway emphasizes the presenters “will not make speeches.” Calaway has been involved with the Aspen Institute for 30 years and is a strong proponent of how they conduct dialogue in their events. The Roaring Fork Cultural Council events will follow that model.

The Roaring Fork Cultural Council is anticipating larger and larger audiences for these events, so they have arranged an overflow room at the nearby Carbondale Community Center, where more people may see the event via live video at a discounted admission price. A reception for the presenter will follow the event, where everyone will be able to greet him or her.
